Choperal del Tòfol
The Choperal del Tòfol (Tofòl popplar grove) is one of the most pleasant natural spots along the river in the Lleida area. Sitting on the banks of the River Segre, this green space takes its name from the abundance of poplars growing in the surrounding area, forming a cool, leafy grove that contrasts with the agricultural landscapes that dominate much of the region.
The "Tofól" that gives the place its name comes from a popular figure from the early 20th century known for his boat, which people used to cross the river. Tòfol's boat connected the Rufea district with the Albatàrrec area.
The area is an excellent example of a riparian forest, an ecosystem typical of river plains where groundwater and periodic flooding encourage the growth of lush vegetation. The tall poplars provide shade during the warmer months and serve as a refuge for numerous species of birds, insects and small mammals. Among its branches, it is common to hear the song of various birds or to watch the flight of species associated with the river.
El Choperal del Tòfol is also a place much loved by Lleida locals for going for a walk, relaxing or enjoying outdoor activities. The presence of footpaths and rest areas makes it a real gateway to nature without having to venture too far from the city. The gently undulating landscape and the proximity to the water help to create a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere all year round.
As well as its scenic value, this area helps to conserve the biodiversity of the Segre ecological corridor. Riparian forests such as this one play a vital role in protecting riverbanks from erosion, improving water quality and facilitating the movement of wildlife.
