Parque de la Mitjana
Just a few minutes from the centre of Lleida, La Mitjana Park is one of the most valuable and unique natural areas in the Segre Valley. Covering an area of around 90 hectares, this riverside area was designated an Area of Natural Interest in 1979 and is home to one of the finest examples of riverside woodland in all of Catalonia.
The park occupies a former floodplain that has been shaped over the centuries by the flooding of the River Segre. The name comes from the Catalan word mitjana, meaning islands or stretches of land between different branches of a river. This origin explains the presence of lagoons, secondary channels, wet meadows and small floodplains, which together form a constantly changing landscape of great ecological richness.
The abundance of water has encouraged the growth of lush vegetation consisting of poplars, aspens, ash trees, alders and willows, alongside reeds, rushes and other plants typical of damp environments. This genuine green corridor is home to a remarkable diversity of species. The most common birds include the grey heron, the moorhen, the kingfisher and various birds of prey, while among the mammals, foxes, wild boars and small animals typical of the river ecosystem can be spotted.
As well as its ecological importance, La Mitjana is a place much loved by the people of Lleida for walking, playing sport and enjoying nature. A network of footpaths, footbridges, wildlife viewpoints and rest areas allows visitors to explore the park at their leisure and discover its various habitats.
La Mitjana is an exceptional example of how a natural area can be preserved alongside a major city. Its combination of water, woodland and biodiversity makes this corner of the Segre a true natural haven and one of Lleida’s main green spaces.
