Castell
This fortress, located in Sagunto, sits atop a hill at the final spur of the Sierra Calderona mountain range. Its strategic position has played a crucial role throughout the town’s history. The fortress was declared a National Monument in 1931.
Stretching approximately one kilometre, the fortress walls showcase a blend of architectural styles from different historical periods. Iberian, Roman, medieval, and modern remains can all be found within the structure, reflecting its rich and layered past. As a result, the current perimeter of the Muslim fortress does not align with the original boundaries of the earlier Iberian and Roman settlements.
Today, the fortress complex is divided into seven distinct areas, with the most significant being the Plaza de Armas. This area contains the remains of the Roman forum, a rock-carved cistern, public buildings, remnants of shops, religious structures, and the north and south buttresses. Meanwhile, in the Plaza de San Fernando, visitors can explore the Epigraphic Antiquarium, which showcases an exhibition of Latin, Iberian, and Hebrew inscriptions recovered from various archaeological sites across the municipality.
