Shrine of Nuestra Señora de los Afligidos
This is a church built in 1699 in the town of Alfara de la Baronia, in the province of Valencia, with the active participation of the local villagers. It has gone through several restorations, mainly between 2006 and 2015, carried out by the Brotherhood of the Virgen de los Afligidos. It features a simple Doric-style architecture with a rectangular floor plan, a single nave, and two side chapels located in the buttresses. The design includes round arches and lunettes. The church is dominated by the image of the patroness of Alfara de la Baronia, Nuestra Señora de los Afligidos, a Baroque sculpture dating from the late 17th century.
A pilgrimage takes place around this hermitage on 7 September during the patroness celebrations, where the Virgin is carried from her shrine to the town parish church. Until just over a decade ago, the image of the Virgin was accompanied by several bonfires lit along its route between the two temples. However, sensibly, this tradition is no longer observed due to the risk of wildfires in the area.
