El Toro
Located at an altitude of around 1,000 m, this village in the comarca of Alto Palancia has been a disputed territory throughout its history. These conflicts usually concerned the rights of the inhabitants and, like other municipalities in the area, it has changed jurisdiction many times.
Its architectural heritage includes the castle, built due to the strategic location of this municipality halfway between Aragon and Valencia, and of which today only the ruins remain, crowning the municipality from a rocky promontory. Also worth a visit are the 16th century Town Hall, the Shrine of San Miguel and the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, both dating from the 17th century.
In terms of natural landmarks, the well known as Pozo Junco stands out, in which there is a very important ecosystem, as well as the source of the River Palancia.
Local festivals include the truffle fair, the most important in the municipality, with truffles cultivation occupying a considerable area of the municipality. The harvest and threshing festivals are other highlights, taking place during the month of August and a good example of the importance of agriculture in this municipality. Other big dates on the El Toro calendar are the pilgrimages in honour of San Roque.
