Riverside forest
The riverside forest, also known as gallery woodland, is a type of plant formation with a variety of specific flora and fauna, forming an ecosystem of great value, especially in areas with dry climates such as the Iberian Peninsula and, specifically, in this area of the province of Soria.
It is characterised by the fact that it extends along both riverbeds, on land which, at a certain depth, is soaked with water. Different vegetation barriers usually appear, which vary according to the conditions of the terrain, with an initial strip of small species such as grasses and some shrub species, which are able to withstand the periodic flooding of the river level and soils with a high percentage of water. Its deciduous vegetation is adapted to the periodic flooding that can occur in these areas. The species found in this type of forest differ depending on the flow of the river, but the most common are white willow, alder, poplar, ash, black poplar and elm.
Among the most important properties of these forests are their high productivity and the great dynamism in terms of habitats. This combined with their particular water conditions due to the proximity to the river means they are commonly home to species typical of cool climates and humid areas. Among the main functions are the regulation of the river's microclimate, the stability of the banks, filtering the entry of sediments, great scenic, recreational and cultural value.
In this case, the riverside woodland is established around the Golmayo riverbed, next to which there are several hiking routes that run through the municipality of the same name and which allow local residents and visitors to the area to enjoy this natural enclave to the full.
