Dehesa of Golmayo
The Dehesa de Golmayo is located in the Soria town of Golmayo, in the vicinity of the Fuentetoba district, which belongs to this municipality. In this natural space, visitors can encounter free-roaming cattle grazing freely in the countryside, which just shows the importance of livestock farming in this region. In fact, many of the dehesas in the area have their roots in the historic Concejo de la Mesta, a national guild of livestock farmers from all over the Peninsula set up in the 13th century, and considered to be one of the first European trade associations. Its main function was to regulate livestock farming and to defend the interests and privileges of the livestock sector.
The predominant vegetation in this area is made up of species like Pyrenean oak, holm oak, Scots pine and Spanish juniper. Thyme, lavender, tea, chamomile, elderberry and mallow bushes also abound. As a habitat for fauna, this dehesa is home to species like rabbits, partridges and birds of prey such as the black eagle, the golden eagle and the griffon vulture.
