Talveila
The municipality and village of Talveila is located in the comarca of Pinares in Soria and today has a population of around 120. Until the early 20th century, neighbouring hamlet of Cubillas belonged to Talveila. Its independence, together with the subsequent rural exodus, meant that the number of inhabitants of Talveila was drastically reduced during this period.
Although no archaeological remains have been found in the area, it is believed that the origins of this locality date back the Celtic period to which the name Talveila corresponds. However, the urban centre as it is known today dates back to the mid-11th century when the repopulation of the area began after the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors.
The Church of San Miguel Arcángel, built on the site of an earlier church that burnt down, gives the parish something of a modern look. Despite this, elements of the previous church were preserved, such as the altarpieces and an old baptismal font. The town's civil architecture also includes large adobe houses that are a perfect example of the popular architecture of the area.
However, the main attraction of the municipality lie beyond the village in the surrounding natural environment, with vast expanses of pine forests. The local economy relies heavily on forestry. From the surrounding forests they obtained the wood necessary for the construction of the carts to later be used for what is known as "carretería" transport.
The town is located in a valley through which the River Marina and the River Chico, both tributaries of the Ucero, flow. The limestone mountain ranges are of great interest from a palaeontological perspective and are a central feature of the Soria landscape. This natural enclave is a refuge for a rich variety of fauna, including foxes, roe deer and wild boar.
In Talveila, locals celebrate their patron saint's fiestas in honour of San Miguel Arcángel in late September. The celebrations see traditional games and dances, children's games and a community meal.
