Linares
The village of Linares belongs to the parish of Proaza.
Located at an altitude of 760 m, it is the highest village in the parish of Proaza.
Among the few buildings in the village is the church of Saint María Magdalena, included in the Asturias Architectural Heritage Inventory.
In the town there was a malatería, a hospital dedicated to the cure of lepers, which began its services at the end of the 13th century and finally closed in the 18th century. Like most of these facilities, it was located in an important crossing point on the Camino Real de la Mesa.
The Camino Real de la Mesa is an ancient Roman road that linked Asturias with León, although it is believed to have been built over another older road used by the inhabitants of the area.
When Don Pelayo defeated the Berber chief Munuza in the Battle of Covadonga, the latter tried to flee Asturias to the Meseta Central plateau using this road.
On the other hand, this path was used as a backdrop for the film ¿Para qué sirve un oso? (What's a bear for?) by director Tom Fernandez.
Less than a kilometre from the village is the Cruz de Linares viewpoint, from which there is a wonderful view of the Sierra del Aramo and Santo Adriano.
In Linares, the fiestas of La Magdalena are held on the penultimate weekend of July and the festivities of "El Cristo" on the penultimate weekend of September.
