Lagos de Barrera
Lagos de Barrera is a lagoon complex made up of five small lagoons.
These accumulations of water are located on the Barrera plain, at the foot of the peak of the same name.
The area is characterised by a karst landscape with numerous underground tunnels, sinkholes and dry valleys. During heavy rainfall, these dry valleys are flooded by the many streams in the area, forming lagoons, such as the lakes of La Barrera.
There are other lagoons in the area, such as Vega Castro, Foslayegua or Tambaisna, formed as a result of the same process.
The pools are surrounded by a wooden fence to prevent cattle from approaching them. The waters of the three largest lagoons are used to supply watering troughs for the animals.
The Caldoveiro peak looms above these lagoons, at an altitude of 1354 m. It is one of the most prominent mountains in the region. As with the surrounding area, the landscape is of contrasts caused by the karst landscape that has developed dry valleys, hills and an important underground network of caves that act as sinkholes.
The fauna includes wolves (Canis lupus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), European wild cats (Felis silvestris), different species of bats and birds of prey and, occasionally, red deer (Cervus elaphus) and brown bears (Ursus arctos).
The vegetation in the area is characterised by grassland and scrub with some common holly (Ilex aquifolium), common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), yew (Taxus spp.) and mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia).
