Castañedo del Monte
Castañedo del Monte is a village in the parish of Santo Adriano.
The village is located at the foot of Pico Plantón, with a summit of 751 metres above sea level and spectacular views of the Trubia Valley. On the way up to the peak there are old iron mines that were one of the main economic engines of the village in bygone times.
The history of the village is strongly linked to mining, and here there is one of the oldest industrial iron mining sites in Asturias.
The La Parva mines began to operate in 1794 to supply the Trubia arms factory. Although production was never so prolific, work continued in the mines until the end of the 19th century, when they began to be abandoned after the factory fell into disuse.
Remnants of this activity can still be seen in the area, such as mine shafts, tunnels, clearings and open cuttings.
In the village is the Church of the Archangel Saint Gabriel, which has a regular floor plan, a single nave, a sacristy, a simple belfry and a porch with semicircular arches. The festivities in honour of Saint Gabriel are held on 29th September, in addition to San Romano, on 9th August, and San Antonio, on 13th June. Notwithstanding, the main fiesta in Castañedo del Monte is that of San Xuan, which is commemorated with a pilgrimage on 24th June.
