San Salvador
San Salvador is a municipality in the parish of Arrojo, located 420 m above sea level and only one kilometre away from Bárzana.
It is located in the valley of the Trubia River, at the foot of the Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park.
The Senda del Oso Nature Trail passes through the municipality. This route follows that of an old mining train that linked the iron and coal mines of the Quirós Valley with the station of Trubia along a 30-kilometre route. A 10-kilometre branch line was added to the initial route from Caranga de Abajo to the mines of Teverga, thus forming a Y-shaped layout.
The first of the railways to pass this way was in 1874 and, although the mines remained active until 1992, the railway was closed and dismantled in October 1963.
Along the way, the route passes through such varied landscapes as valleys, gorges, mountains, the Valdemurio reservoir and part of the Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Reserve, among others. The route takes walkers through Biosphere Reserves, Sites of Community Importance and Special Protection Areas for Birds.
In addition, walkers can visit the Natural Monuments of the Millenary Yew Tree, the Oak of Bermiego, the Gorge of Las Xanas, the Ports of Maravia and the Cave of Huerta.
In addition to such rich natural heritage, there is also an extensive cultural heritage such as the pre-Romanesque churches of La Plaza and Tuñón and medieval towers; Bermiego, a late medieval rural complex; Bandujo, a perfectly preserved medieval village; the Ethnographic Museum of Quirós and Region; the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter and the Church of Saint María de Villanueva; and the Prehistoric Park and the Castle of Alesga in San Salvador de Alesga (Teverga).
