Barrio de San Frontis
The Barrio de San Frontis, also known as the Arrabal de San Frontis or the Puebla de San Frontis, is a suburb of the city of Zamora situated on the banks of the Duero River.
The name of the bridge is derived from the Latin phrase "sub frontis pontis," which translates as "under the bridge." This designation refers to the necessity of traversing a viaduct, which at the time was known as the Stone Bridge or Pontem Novum, to gain access to the town.
Another etymological theory postulates that the town's name originated from the establishment of the settlement by peasants and artisans from the French town of Périgueux in the 11th century, during the High Middle Ages.
The period of San Frontis's splendour in the 12th century was closely linked to the appearance of various religious orders, such as the Franciscans and the Poor Clares, who settled in the town.
The religious significance of the city of Zamora was evidenced by the construction of the Monastery of San Jerónimo in 1534, which was once one of the most important monuments in the city.
Regarding the architectural heritage that remains in the town, the Parish Church of San Frontis represents a significant landmark, situated at the heart of the suburb.
The church was constructed at the beginning of the 13th century in the Romanesque style. The original structure comprised a single rectangular nave with a wooden roof. A larger chapel, with a width slightly greater than that of the nave, and a wide semi-octagonal chancel, which is reinforced with abutments, were added later. In the sixteenth century, the church underwent an expansion, with the addition of a new aisle.
The interior of the edifice houses a funerary chapel and preserves the carving of the Nazarene of San Frontis, which dates from the first half of the 17th century.
The chapels of San Lorenzo de los Racioneros and Cristo de la Carrera or del Humilladero, which have now entirely disappeared, were also situated in the vicinity of the suburb.
The Puente de los Poetas, also known as the Puente de los Tres Árboles (Bridge of the Three Trees), is a recent construction located at the entrance to the town. It is made of concrete.
The natural surroundings of San Frontis provide an ideal setting for the Playa de los Pelambres, situated on the banks of the river Duero. A traditional bathing area for the people of Zamora, which was excavated in 2019.
Regarding the celebrations, the Fiesta de la Santa Cruz is held in mid-September. It is a traditional procession of the Cofradía del Señor y de la Santa Cruz de San Frontis (Brotherhood of the Lord and the Holy Cross of San Frontis).
