Atalaya del Enebral
The Atalaya del Enebral is situated on a hill in the El Enebral area, which is located between the municipalities of Osma and Quintanas de Gormaz in the province of Soria.
The structure was constructed in the Middle Ages, around the 10th century, and is of Islamic origin.
Its primary purpose was to serve as a lookout, and it formed part of the defensive system of Gormaz. This system linked the fortress of the town with various watchtowers located in the Duero River, which served as a natural border between Christians and Muslims.
The construction of this watchtower is in keeping with the history of Muslim defensive systems and fortresses, which can still be seen in the province of Soria. The structures were erected in highly visible areas to provide a deterrent to Christian troops advancing from the north of the peninsula.
In terms of architectural features, this watchtower is a conical truncated tower with a circular ground plan and thick masonry walls.
The structure is approximately 9 metres high and 6 metres in diameter. Furthermore, the exterior has been preserved with the original lime mortar rendering. The property comprises two storeys and is accessed via a raised entrance several metres above ground level.
The watchtower of El Enebral was designated an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1949 and is currently undergoing restoration and conversion into a dovecote.
