The Torre de la Mora
The Torre de la Mora is a structure located on the outskirts of the village of Vildé, in the municipality of El Burgo de Osma in the province of Soria.
The tomb or funerary monument is of Roman origin and was constructed between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. It is situated on the banks of the river Caracena, which flows through the town. Specifically, in the vicinity of the former urban centre of Traslashuertas. The site comprises the remains of a Hispano-Roman villa and settlement, which span over two centuries of history.
This type of structure follows the model of Hispano-Roman sepulchral architecture typical of the Mediterranean coast, making it an exception and an exotic structure in the north of the Iberian Peninsula.
In terms of architectural features, the building is a collapsed tower, with the upper part now missing. The structure is a two-storey rectangular building constructed using Roman concrete, a material known as opus caementicium, which was later enhanced with ceramic additions.
The Torre de la Mora boasts two distinctive features that set it apart from other tombs of the period. Firstly, it features an access staircase. Secondly, it contains the remains of frescoes that decorated and covered the vault.
In 1993, the site was designated an Asset of Cultural Interest, along with the nearby site of Traslashuertas. This designation was based on the discovery of an Early Christian funerary stele, dated between the 5th and 6th centuries AD, in the vicinity of the site.
