Laguna de La Serna
The Laguna de la Serna is a seasonal lagoon of endorheic origin located in the municipality of El Royo.
Also known as Laguna de Hinojosa de la Sierra, this location is situated near the town of Hinojosa de la Sierra, making it an ideal destination for birdwatchers. The area offers the opportunity to observe a diverse range of bird species, including herons and other migratory birds.
The landscape comprises the remains of an ancient fortress from the 15th century and the impressive palace built by the Hurtado de Mendoza family, lords of these lands, at the end of the 16th century. These structures can be seen throughout the summer and autumn months, even at the beginning of winter. At this juncture, the area also becomes suitable for grazing cattle.
The coastal area in question is accessible to visitors during the spring months, when the Duero River flows at a higher level. This area is approximately 2 km in length and is home to a diverse range of aquatic life, including storks, herons and ducks.
However, this is not the only attraction. The area is also a popular stopover for numerous species of birds on their annual migration. To enjoy this spectacular event, a bird observatory has been constructed, complete with information panels.
The site covers a total area of 45 ha, with the water occupying approximately 10 ha when it is present.
In 2001, the Laguna de la Serna was included in the Regional Catalogue of Wetlands of Special Interest of the Junta de Castilla y León.
