El Dornajito Spring or Pine
Near kilometre 35 of the Anaga-Chasna Nature Trail, in the vicinity of Benijos and Chasna in La Orotava, there is a rest area known as Cruz del Dornajito Pine or Spring.
It is an old spring well known in the area as a resting place and water supply for all those who climb Mount Teide.
This spring became famous thanks to British naturalist J. Edens, who included a description of it in a document describing his climb up Mount Teide in 1715. In this document, which was published in a journal of the Royal Society of London, he indicated that it was a hole from which clear water came out of the mountain.
Years later, another prestigious scientist, in this case Alexander Von Humboldt, also mentioned this spot in one of his writings, indicating that it was the only spring that he could find on his climb up the Canary volcano.
To get there, set off from the area of La Caldera, which offers impressive views of the Orotava Valley as you walk along trails and forest tracks through pine and heath forests. From here, the forest becomes Monteverde where laurisilva dominates.
