Historical site of the Battle of Arapiles
South of the city of Salamanca is the village of Arapiles, where the famous Battle of Arapiles took place in 1812.
The area where the Peninsular War battle took place has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Historic Site.
It is worth noting that the Peninsular War was a conflict that ravaged the Iberian Peninsula between 1808 and 1814 and that the Battle of Arapiles was one of the most relevant events due to the resounding victory over the French army.
The area borders Calvarrasa de Arriba to the east, Arapiles to the west, the Pelagarcía farmstead to the north, and the municipalities of Arapiles and Terradillos to the south.
It contains the hills of Arapil Chico and Arapil Grande, which were strategic points of the battle for the allied army formed by the English, Portuguese and Spanish commanded by General Arthur Wellesley, and the French troops commanded by Marshal Marmont respectively, and between which the bulk of the battle was fought.
Nowadays, Arapil Grande can be visited to enjoy a panoramic view of the area and there is a monument to commemorate the Battle of Los Arapiles and the Fallen in the Peninsular War.
Visitors can go to the Arapiles Battle Interpretation Hall in town to learn more about this important historical event.
