Darnius-Boadella Reservoir

Situated in the upper Muga river basin, the Darnius Boadella reservoir extends across the municipalities of Darnius, San Lorenzo de la Muga, Terradas and Massanet de Cabrenys. The maximum water level when the reservoir is full is 3.6 km² and it has a capacity of 62 hm³.

The reservoir was built in the late 1960s to generate electricity and supply water to the surrounding towns and canals. To this end, it was necessary to flood a small area used for agriculture and livestock farming, as well as the building housing the Royal Foundry of Sant Sebastià de la Muga – a former 18th-century cannonball factory – and the Shrine of San Sebastià.

The reservoir allows visitors to swim, fish and go kayaking or motorboating, although a permit is required for the latter two activities. You can also enjoy a day’s sailing, canoeing, water skiing, wakeboarding or kayaking, and the surrounding area is perfect for hiking and mountain biking.

It is also a must to take in the wooded landscape surrounding the reservoir, whose waters change colour depending on the light. To make sure you don’t miss the best panoramic views, you simply must visit the Serrat del Sentinella and La Tortuga viewpoints, which offer spectacular views of the surrounding area, especially at sunset.
