River Muga

The River Muga rises in the municipality of Albanyà, in a mountainous area of cliffs and crags covered with pine, holm oak, rowan, beech and chestnut trees, making it ideal for river fishing. The river flows into the Mediterranean Sea near the town of Castelló d'Empúries.

Over its 58-kilometre course, it winds its way through the Alt Empordà region (Girona), lending its distinctive character to the various landscapes it flows through, shaped by agriculture. It also features numerous waterfalls well worth seeing, and the surrounding area boasts a large number of trails ideal for cyclists.

One of the highlights of its course is the Boadella reservoir, to which it contributes a significant quantity of water; thanks to the sand that accumulates there, forming a mountain beach ideal for kayaking.

The River Muga flows into the Bay of Roses, on the border between the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park – home to more than 300 species of birds – and Empuriabrava, Europe’s largest marina, with 24 kilometres of navigable canals.
