The estuary of the River Muga where it flows into the Mediterranean Sea
The Pyrenean River La Muga rises in the municipality of Albanyà, between Vallespir and l'Alt Empordà. After flowing for 58 kilometres through this region of Girona, it flows into the Mediterranean Sea, near the town of Castelló d'Empúries.
Its final section is entirely canalised and runs through a landscape of great strategic importance. A particular highlight here is Empuriabrava, Europe’s largest marina with 24 kilometres of navigable canals. It is also home to the Els Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Nature Reserve, the second most important wetland in Catalonia.
The estuary is situated in the Gulf of Rosas, a 15-kilometre stretch of coastline between Cap de Creus and the Montgrí massif. Here, the fresh water of the river combines with the salt water of the Mediterranean Sea in a unique setting. More than 300 species of birds share this space with the hundreds of boats that pass through the marina’s canals. Thanks to the excellent wind and water conditions, it is a very popular spot for water sports such as sailing and kitesurfing.
