Boadella d'Empordà
Situated in a valley flanked by mountains and hills, Boadella de Empordà is part of the comarca of Alt Empordà of Girona and comprises the villages of Boadella and Les Escaules. The municipality is centred around the River Muga, which is home to places such as the Les Encantades cave, the Caula waterfall, the Les Puces mill, and the Mas spring and bridge.
The town’s historic centre, which, together with Les Escaules, came under the jurisdiction of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes in the late 10th century, is a must-see. Visitors can admire houses built in the traditional architectural style of the area, with their stone façades. The centrepiece is the Church of Santa Cecilia, which has a single nave and side chapels; dating from around the 16th or 17th century, its main façade features a semicircular archway and a rose window.
Next to it stands the castle, the construction of which, around the 12th century, led to the founding of the village. Rows of boulders flanking the main doorway remain from the original structure, while the rest was rebuilt during the 15th century. The courtyard features a long staircase with doorways and a Gothic window, while various arches have been preserved in the main hall and the tower.
A wall built between the 13th and 14th centuries, with access through a gate, ‘protected’ the town until the second decade of the 20th century; the town still exudes a medieval atmosphere thanks to the present-day houses, which were built in the 16th to 18th centuries on top of those dating from the Middle Ages.
The town, with its economy based on services and industry, boasts a busy calendar of festivals. These include the Santa Cecilia Festivals, around 22 November, featuring competitions, tournaments, evening dances, games and traditional dance; and the Festa d'Estiu or small festival, held in honour of San Miguel on the Sunday before or after 29 September, featuring a communal meal, traditional dance and habaneras.
