Ridaura river
The river Ridaura has its source in the massif of L'Ardenya, just below the Puig de Sant Ribagorbierna. After crossing more than 9 km, in which it flows through the municipalities of Santa Cristina d'Aro, Llagostera and Castell Platja d'Aro, it flows into the Pla del Pinell, located south of Platja d'Aro.
It is the second most important river in the region after the Ter and forms the backbone on which the entire Vall d'Aro is structured.
There are several theories about the origin of its name, some saying that it comes "from the hazelnut tree" as its common name is aura, while others argue that it is synonymous with "dry river". In any case, the river is rich in flora, boasting a lush riparian forest abundant with species such as ash and alder trees interspersed with hazelnut and ferns.
Although dry during the summer months, the river was of great importance in the development of the settlements, which have been able to harness its waters’ energy.
According to the Geological Service of the General Directorate of Hydraulic Works, in the lower section of the river there is an underground aquifer of about 9 km² and about 35 metres of maximum depth. The aquifer is divided into two parts, Santa Cristina d'Aro and Castell d'Aro.
