Onyar river
The source of the River Onyar can be found in the Guilleries massif at an altitude of 220 m, among forests of holly and cork oaks, beech and oak trees.
A tributary of the River Ter with a length of approximately 34 km and an average flow rate of 1.82 m3/s, the Onyar crosses Girona from south to north and receives water from the Monar o Conda irrigation channel – also coming from the Ter. The waterway crosses Mercadal and is used to irrigate market gardens.
To the north, the Onyar is joined by the waters coming from the Monar o Conda irrigation channel (which in turn comes from the river Ter), a channel that is used to irrigate the orchards in the "Mercadal" area. As it journeys further north, the river converges with the Güell and the Galligans rivers before finally merging into the Ter near the Pedret neighbourhood.
Within its basin are the towns of Sanaüja and Sant Martí Sapresa, Vilobí d'Onyar, Riudellots de la Selva, Sant Andreu Salou, Campllong, Fornells de la Selva, Quart and Girona.
Due to the flooding in recent years, at the request of the town council, the Eastern Pyrenees Hydraulic Division proposed four solutions to divert the course of the river. The project that was approved consisted of the construction of solid lateral walls, the upper parts of which form two roads. It was considered the most economical and the most suitable solution to respect the charm that this waterway has always had.
