Aiguamolls de Rufea
Aiguamolls de Rufea are one of the most valuable natural areas in the Lleida area. Situated beside the River Segre, between La Mitjana Park and the Utxesa reservoir, these wetlands are now an important haven for biodiversity and a superb spot for nature watching.
Its origins are particularly unusual. The site occupies former aggregate quarries that were in operation until the 1980s. After operations ceased, the excavations became flooded due to the proximity of the water table, forming ponds and waterlogged areas which, over time, were colonised by vegetation and wildlife. Subsequently, a number of environmental restoration projects made it possible to restore this area and transform it into a wetland of great ecological interest.
The landscape consists of river lagoons, wet meadows and riparian woodlands where poplars, black poplars, willows, alders and ash trees thrive. The abundance of water supports a rich community of wildlife, particularly waterbirds and migratory birds. Visitors can spot ducks, herons, cormorants, storks, night herons and the striking kingfisher, as well as numerous birds of prey that use this ecological corridor to move across the Lleida plain.
The Aiguamolls de Rufea feature footpaths, observation points and interpretative areas that allow visitors to explore the wetland without disturbing the peace and quiet of the wildlife. As a result, the area has become a leading destination for environmental education, nature photography and birdwatching.
As well as its ecological importance, this area demonstrates how a site degraded by human activity can be transformed into a valuable ecosystem. Today, Aiguamolls de Rufea forms part of Lleida’s natural heritage and is one of the finest examples of the environmental richness on display along the course of the River Segre.
