Alepo pine (Pinus halepensis)
The Aleppo pine can grow up to 20 m tall. Its pine cones are small, compared to other types of pine trees such as the stone pine, as are its pine nuts. It tends to grow in Mediterranean climates where there is plenty of sunshine and not too much rain or cold. This is why this species tends to prefer limestone soils close to the coast. This makes the Mediterranean region perfect for this species. In fact, it is particularly abundant in the eastern half and in areas of the Balearic Islands. In fact, the islands of Ibiza and Formentera are referred to as the islas Pitiusas ("pine islands") due to the abundance of this species on their coastlines.
Regarding the main uses of Aleppo pine, it is a species whose wood is not very valuable due to its high resin content; however, it is used for the production of some packaging or agglomerates and even for tanning. Aleppo pine is perfect for restoring and slowing erosion on dry land near the coast.
