Juniper grove
Wooded formation composed mainly of junipers (Juniperus thurifera). In this juniper grove in Teruel, the Spanish juniper coexists alongside the Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea).
The two species of the same genus have common characteristics, such as their appearance and the evergreen, squamiform (scale-like) leaves covering the stem. At the same time they have clear differences: the fruits of the Spanish juniper are bluish-black and those of the Phoenician juniper are reddish; the twigs of the Spanish juniper are rough while those of the Phoenician juniper are round, due to the shape of its leaves.
The fruits of both species are highly appreciated by birds, who feed on them and disperse them.
