The river Jiloca - Acequia madre
The River Jiloca rises at the Cella Fountain, the largest artesian well in Europe with a flow of 3,500 litres per second, at an altitude of 1,023 m. After a distance of 126 km, it flows into the River Jalón at Calatayud at an altitude of 524 m.
On its upper course it flows along the Acequia Madre, an irrigation canal built in the 18th century to drain the Cañizar Lagoon, running from Cella to Monreal del Campo, where it receives water from the Ojos de Monreal del Campo spring (760 litres per second), which is why this spring has sometimes been considered the source of the River Jiloca.
The fluvial heritage of the course of the Jiloca was of great importance in the past, and the focus of much of the economic activity of many surrounding municipalities. This heritage includes numerous mills, oil mills and bridges. The most important being the Villafeliche powder mill, which had 180 mills in 1800. Today you can enjoy part of this heritage that has been preserved to this day.
