El Cañizar Lagoon
El Cañizar Lagoon is a reclaimed wetland that is home to a multitude of species of flora and fauna typical of these lake environments.
The old Cañizar lagoon covered an area of more than 11 km2 and had a maximum depth of almost 3 m, making it one of the largest wetlands on the Iberian Peninsula. This wetland has been drained since historical times, and various works were undertaken for this purpose. The most important of these was the construction of the so-called Acequia Madre irrigation canal, completed by the Italian military engineer Domingo Ferrari in 1732.
Today, part of the space occupied by the wetland has been recovered and different actions have been carried out in order to preserve the environmental values of this space and to enhance its value for public use.
