Cascajares halt station
The halt station at Cascajares was once part of the ill-fated railway line that was to link the Cantabrian coast, from Santander to the Mediterranean at the port of Sagunto. The railway station is located just over two kilometres from the centre of the municipality and in the past it served to boost its economic and social development, allowing both passengers and goods to travel through the area.
However, technical problems, as well as the low profitability of the line, together with the political instability of the early 20th century meant that, in the end, the complete route of this ambitious project never saw the light of day. Nevertheless, some stretches were brought into operation, such as the section passing through Cascajares de la Sierra, in the heart of the province of Burgos, which has remained as one of the vestiges of this grand railway that never was.
With the definitive cessation of services on sections inaugurated up to that time in 1985, buildings like this one were abandoned and condemned to their fate. However, in the case of the Cascajares halt station, the Greenway and Nature Trail, which uses the course of the Santander-Mediterráneo railway line, has managed to revitalise the surroundings. Next to this old station, a rest area has been installed with information panels on the area and the route of the trail, as well as tables and wooden benches for walkers and cyclists to rest.
