Campolara station
The station was once part of the ill-fated railway line that was to link the Cantabrian coast, from Santander to the Mediterranean at the port of Sagunto. The structure of this construction is quite similar to that of other stations in the area belonging to this line, such as Cojóbar.
The technical problems, as well as the low profitability of the line, together with the political instability of the early 20th century meant that, in the end, the complete route of this ambitious project never saw the light of day, although some sections were inaugurated, such as the one that ran through the historic comarca of Tierra de Lara, in which the town of Campolara is located. In 1920, the provincial councils of Burgos, Santander, Soria and Zaragoza supported the construction of the central sections of the Santander-Mediterranean railway. The section between Calatayud and Cidade-Dosante was completed in 1930. However, the connection to Santander was never achieved, with the final 35 km remaining incomplete.
As a vestige of this railway line that never came to be and which was definitively closed in January 1985, there remain today infrastructures such as the Campolara station, which no longer sees rail services or passengers. With the definitive cessation of the sections inaugurated up to that time, due to their economic deficiencies, many of the stations in this part of the province of Burgos were abandoned and condemned to their fate, some becoming property of local councils or private owners. Others, such as this one in Campolara, however, were completely abandoned and are in an advanced state of ruin.
