Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Castillo
This small Romanesque temple was built in the 12th century in what is now the district of San Juan in the municipality of Los Ausines. The shrine boasts a privileged location on the outskirts of the district, perched on the limestone rock of Castillejo, near one of the wind farms that are now so common in this part of the province of Burgos, and offering a panoramic view of the Arlanzón valley. The building has a single nave, rectangular chancel with a pre-Romanesque influence and stands on the foundations of an ancient fortress that protected the inhabitants of the area from enemy attacks from prehistoric times until the Middle Ages. The main elements of Romanesque style that inspired this building can be found on the façade of the building, such as the doorway with no tympanum, the three archivolts and the four capitals with plant motifs, fantastic birds and quadrupeds facing each other.
