Pradolamata
Pradolamata is a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Merindad de Cuesta-Urria, in the district of Villarcayo.
Pascual Madoz mentions it in the mid-19th century in volume XIII of his Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar (Geographical-statistical-historical dictionary of Spain and its overseas possessions). This document indicates that Pradolamata was located on a flat piece of land next to the banks of the river Nela and that it belonged to the judicial district of Villarcayo. In addition, its parish church of Saint John the Baptist is described, comparing it to that of the town of Moneo. The church, built in masonry, has a single rectangular nave and a tiled gabled roof. Access is from one of its sides through a doorway circumscribed by a semicircular arch protected by a porch. At the foot of the church, there is a belfry with two bells.
The town also had a small chapel dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
The economy of Pradolamata is based on rain-fed crops, namely wheat, barley, oats and rye. Travellers are recommended to enjoy its gastronomy, which includes dishes of lechazo (suckling lamb), morcilla (black pudding) and Burgos cheese.
