Old Escaño halt
The old Escaño halt was located at kilometre point 351.8 of the Santander-Mediterranean Sea railway line.
The layout of this site was centred on a single general track with 100 m platforms on both sides. The services were located on the right and the passengers' building to the rear. The route from this halt to the next station, located at Horna-Villarcayo, was 6,204 m long. On leaving Escaño, the train turned right and began an itinerary with a succession of curves and metal bridges that allowed it to cross over the river Nela.
Initially this complex was catalogued as a station on the Santander-Mediterranean Sea line, but was finally reclassified as a halt and experienced a decline after the cessation of passenger service on the Villarcayo-Cidad Dosante section, prior to the closure of the line.
Given its location in the middle of the countryside, it has gradually been abandoned and is now in a crumbling state. It lacks tracks, and both the passenger building, and the services are in a deplorable state of repair.
Escaño was one of the 9 halts that made up the Santander-Mediterranean Sea line, designed to link the ports of Santander and Valencia. This railway was in operation for more than fifty years from Cidad-Dosante in Burgos to Calatayud, where it connected with the Ferrocarril Central de Aragón (Aragon Central Railway). The project originated at the end of the 19th century, but did not come to fruition until 1920, when the State Government took up a previous study. The line was opened to the public between 1927 and 1930, although the connection with Santander never took place, despite the construction of the La Engaña tunnel that crossed the Cantabrian mountain range. In addition, the line underwent shut downs and abandonment, and finally closed in 1985. It transported a wide variety of goods, including coal, sand, wood, citrus fruits, cereals, livestock and building materials.
