Pedrosa de Valdeporres
The Castilian village of Pedrosa de Valdeporres is located to the north of the province of Burgos and is the capital of Merindad de Valdeporres, which in the past must have been a border area between the Cantabrians and the Celtic tribe of the Autrigones who had their settlement in Seguencia Paramica the current Cigüenza 3000 years ago. According to the documentation found, the administrative centrality of Pedrosa de Valdeporres dates back to the 14th century.
Throughout the year it has about 144 inhabitants and in summer this figure triples with visitors who come here to enjoy some of the charming places in the area.
This is the case of the plateresque San Esteban church, built around the end of the 15th century, between the late Gothic and Renaissance periods. Its façade, made of ashlar stone, stands out due to its décor, in the style of the period, in which a coat of arms stands out located on the square bell tower where there is a clock from a more recent period. In this tower, as in the façade of the temple, there are two doors decorated with semi-circular arches.
The natural heritage of the area is also worth mentioning, as in the vicinity of this village there are centuries-old oak trees, dolmens, landscapes full of silence... It is highly recommended to visit the Cruz del Paño, located about three kilometres from Pedrosa. It is a natural viewpoint where you can enjoy wonderful views of the most emblematic mountains in the area. On one side you can see the Paño mountain, on the upper part of which the crags that shelter the Dulla channels stand out. On the other side you can see the windmills and the Somo mountains, already in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains.
The town’s multi-adventure park is also very popular, with six hectares of land full of circuits of bridges, zip lines and interpretation centres.
The patron saint festivities of Pedrosa de Valdeporres are celebrated on 3rd August.
