Parish Church of Saint Stephen
The parish church of St. Stephen is located on a hill on the outskirts of Montoto de Ojeda. It is a 12th century Romanesque church, which, despite having undergone several modifications during the 16th and 17th centuries, still has some of its original features.
This church is composed of a single nave with a semicircular apse with Romanesque corbels that extend along the presbytery. These corbels depict various people and creatures such as a reader, a lion, or a musician.
Its 13th century pointed arch doorway has three plain archivolts, a diamond-pointed chambrana, and plant-decorated capitals.
Inside the nave there was an interesting modification made in the 16th century, where the original roof was replaced by two starred ribbed vaults. The two Romanesque capitals of the triumphal arch are also noteworthy.
At the end of the 20th century, the 17th century mural paintings that cover the apse were restored. The portico, the sacristy, and the belfry wall, a very common type of bell tower in the province of Palencia, are also from this century.
