Villaescusa de Ecla
Near Aguilar de Campoo and Alar del Rey, lies the hamlet of Villaescusa de Ecla in the Valley of La Ojeda. It belongs to the municipality of Santibáñez de Ecla along with San Andrés de Arroyo.
Apparently, there were at least two pre-Roman forts of Cantabrian origin in the area.
This small town is home to the Church of St. Helena, built in ashlar, which consists of a single nave that is divided into three sections and has a groin vault roof. Inside it houses several neoclassical altarpieces with sculptures of St. Roque, St. Martin, the Virgin and Child, and St. Bartholomew from the 16th century. The festivities of St. Helena are held on May 3 with a mass in honour of the patron saint followed by the adoration of the cross.
Other tourist attractions include its three Roman bridges, the Cervigona waterfall, and the Devil's Gorge. Legend has it that the devil himself lived in this territory and transported stones to a nearby aqueduct. On one of these trips, the devil lost his balance, falling to the ground and leaving an imprint of his face in the stone. This stone is found in this gorge, hence its name.
