Nogales de Pisuerga
83 km from Palencia and just over 2.5 km from Alar del Rey is the town of Nogales de Pisuerga.
Various remains found in the area indicate that there were Roman and Arab settlements in this place that were destroyed during the Christian conquest.
During the 14th century, the town was part of the Merindad de Aguilar de Campoo (an ancient division), although it later became part of the Intendencia de Burgos between 1758 and 1833. Nogales began to grow in 1842 and became part of the municipality of Alar del Rey.
Walking through the village, you can see one of its cultural treasures: the St. John the Baptist parish church. It is a Romanesque church from the 12th century, which underwent some reforms in later centuries. You will also see a late 13th or early 14th century Crucifix and an early 18th century Baroque altarpiece overlooking the Romanesque nave of the church. Both have been restored.
As an example of its past as the county seat and lordship of the Calderones, there is a palace bearing a coat of arms over the main door and in one corner.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the Northern St. James' Way: Besaya Route, passes through this village.
