Chapel of San Cosme and San Damián
The Chapel of San Cosme and San Damián is situated in a rural location, with the village of Vadocondes situated on the opposite bank of the Duero River. The chapel is in a field of crops. It stands next to blackberries that take the waters of the Duero and is surrounded by tall poplars and other trees that create a peaceful and friendly place to visit.
The exact date of construction of the chapel is not known, although it is believed that it may have been originally associated with a Gothic settlement. The current constitution brings together elements that are estimated to date from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century.
The sanctuary is constructed using a single elongated rectangular floor plan, built in masonry. The roof is comprised of three slopes at both ends and a gable roof in the central nave. The exterior of the chapel is characterised by an austere design, with a porch supported by wooden beams and columns. The chapel is presided over by a belfry with a single span topped by a Latin cross. The chapel entrance is located on the side, with a semicircular arch providing decoration.
The interior of the temple features pews, columns and a ceiling constructed from wood, which contributes to a comfortable and rustic ambience. Upon entering the premises, one's attention is immediately drawn to the main altarpiece and the chancel area. The area is decorated with a ribbed vault from which hangs a striking chandelier. This area houses the chapel's altarpiece, which was created in 1767 by the renowned artist Manuel de Oria. The altarpiece depicts the medical saints San Cosme and San Damián. The altarpiece features depictions of San Isidro and Santa María de la Cabeza at the base, with the Immaculate Conception depicted at the pinnacle. The sacristy is located behind the altarpiece, attached to the chancel of the chapel.
Please be aware that from the 26th to the 29th of September the Fiestas of San Cosme and San Damián will be taking place, during which a procession will be held in honour of the venerated ones. The procession commences at the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Vadocondes and proceeds at a measured pace, accompanied by dulzainas, towards the chapel. The procession is notable for its joyful peculiarity, with the faithful dancing to the rhythm of the Dulzaineros del Duero.
