Santa Eulalia de Oscos
Santa Eulalia de Oscos is a council, a parish and a village locoated in the Asturian region of Eo-Navia. The town is traversed by the the Agüeira River, which flows through lush, scrubland-dominated landscapes.
Archaeological remains such as the burial mounds of Brañavella, El Chao, and La Granda in Murias suggest that the first settlements date back to the Neolithic period. There are also some castros. Later, Romans arrived to the area drawn by the abundant iron and gold resources for mining. In the Middle Ages, Santa Eulalia was part of the episcopal council of Castropol until local inhabitants negotiated the purchase of the land in 1584. In recognition of its environmental significance, UNESCO designated Santa Eulalia and surrounding areas as a Biosphere Reserve in 2007, and the town received the Exemplary Town of Asturias award from the Princess of Asturias Foundation in 2016.
The town's economy is primarily driven by the service sector, notably rural lodgings, hotels, and restaurants. Agriculture, particularly cattle farming, also plays a significant role. The streets of Santa Eulalia showcase the distinctive local architecture, characterised by the use of slate and wood, featuring several hórreos (granaries on stilts), cabazos (storage structures), and stables.
Santa Eulalia boasts a rich religious heritage, including the Church of Santa Eulalia, which has a well-known tower and belfry, and the Church of Our Lady of los Remedios, and several rural chapels. Notable buildings include the Casa de Aquel Cabo, an agricultural construction from 1762, featuring a house, a chapel, a cabazo and some other facilities that are still preserved. The complex has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). The Casona de La Pruida is a 17th and 18th-century building with a coat of arms and an interior chapel. Visitors can explore the the Museum of the Birthplace of the Marquis of Sargadelos in Ferreirela de Baxo and the Mazonovo ethnographic complex.
The festivities of Saint Roch are celebrated for three days in late August. The Santa Eulalia festivities take place on December 10, including the livestock fair. Other interesting events include Entroiro, the Carnival festival, and Magosto, the chestnut festival held at the end of October.
