Pesquera de Duero
The riverside village of Pesquera de Duero is situated on the right bank of the Duero River, 44 km from Valladolid.
This municipality in the Campo de Peñafiel region is strategically located with a rich terrain that has led to the establishment of different villages since ancient times, as well as the practice of agriculture and livestock farming.
The archaeological remains in the town of Pintia provide clear evidence of human activity in the area from the Bronze Age to the Visigothic period. These include flint points, various ceramics and a milestone.
The hamlet boasts a variety of architectural styles, including the impressive mansions with noble coats of arms, which attest to the fact that the village was once home to a diverse range of families with distinct ancestral backgrounds.
However, the most noteworthy architectural feature is undoubtedly the parish church dedicated to San Juan Bautista. The church is an unfinished treasure in the Herrerian style of Valladolid. The church is constructed from stone and comprises a single nave with a groin vault, which houses two chapels located between the buttresses. The façade features a lintelled doorway and two towers, one of which is unfinished.
The village is home to two notable chapels: the Cristo del Humilladero chapel, which dates to the 17th century, and the Virgen de Rubialejos chapel, which was built in the 18th century. It is worth noting that the path leading to the second of these is flanked by crosses that make up a striking Way of the Cross.
The town's fortunes began to flourish in the 16th century, a period marked by significant demographic and economic growth driven by the expansion of vine cultivation and the establishment of numerous wineries in the area belonging to the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin.
The town of Pesquera de Duero celebrates its annual fiesta in honour of San Juan Bautista on 24 June. During the celebrations, there will be several open-air dances. It is a long-standing tradition to share sweets and lemonade with the local community. Furthermore, the celebrations of the Virgen de Rubialejos are held on 8 September, with a popular pilgrimage.
