Quintanas de Gormaz
Quintanas de Gormaz is a village in Soria that was incorporated into the Alfoz de Gormaz after the Christian conquest. This is reflected in the second part of its name, which would not be separated until the 19th century, when the lordships were liquidated.
This municipality is situated approximately 60 km from the capital of Soria. The surrounding area is home to a variety of natural resources, including forests of black pine (Pinus nigra), holm oak (Quercus ilex) and juniper (Juniperus thurifera), as well as fields of cereal, sunflower and flax. These resources, along with sheep farming, form the basis of the local economy.
The village experienced a period of significant growth following the opening of the Valladolid-Ariza railway line, which facilitated its integration into the Spanish transport network. A station with a passenger building and freight facilities was constructed in the municipality, but the line was subsequently closed in 1985.
The town boasts two notable religious buildings: the 16th-century Church of San Lorenzo and the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias. However, one of the most emblematic buildings in Quintanas de Gormaz is undoubtedly the school. The project was initiated in 1927 by the town's mayor, Laureano Soria, with the objective of capitalising on the town's economic growth resulting from the exploitation of resin. The architect of the iconic rural environment of Soria was Ramón Martiarena Lascurain, who employed a range of 20th-century architectural techniques to create a striking façade. The building currently houses Museo de la Resina, located in the southwest of the village.
The town is situated in a region characterised by a pine forest to the north and extensive crop fields to the south. The latter are supplied with water from the meanders of the Duero River as it passes through the area.
Furthermore, it is important to highlight that a portion of the municipality has been designated as a Site of Community Interest within the Natura 2000 Network, encompassing the banks of the Duero River and its tributaries.
Quintanas de Gormaz celebrates several local festivals, including San Pablo on 25 January, Las Candelas on 3 February, the Virgen de las Angustias on 22 April and San Lorenzo on the first Sunday in August.
