Aguilera
Aguilera is a small village in the municipality of Bayubas de Abajo.
During the Middle Ages, Aguilera served as a strategic stronghold on the Duero frontier, playing a pivotal role in the conquest carried out by Fernando I in 1060. Conversely, the history of El Cid is linked to Aguilera, with the route passing through this village. Following the dissolution of the Ancien Régime in the region of Castilla la Vieja, the municipality was established as a constitutional municipality and subsequently became part of the municipality of Bayubas de Abajo.
The parish church of San Martín is the jewel of the village. It is a 12th-century Romanesque church that was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1983. The building was constructed on the site of a former monastery. The building comprises a single nave which terminates in a semicircular apse. The building is constructed from masonry, except for the porticoed gallery. The triumphal arch is narrow and only decorated on its capitals. This temple is situated at the foot of the hill of El Cabezo, which offers unparalleled views of the Soria region from its summit.
There are indications that a castle may have existed on the summit. It is believed that a watchtower from the Muslim period may have been located on the site.
On 5 and 6 May, Aguilera celebrates the festivities in honour of the patron saint of San Martín.
