Viana de Duero
Viana de Duero is a municipality in the Almazán region. Furthermore, the scope of the project encompasses the districts of Baniel, La Milana, Moñux and Perdices.
The 13th-century church of San Bartolomé is the jewel in the crown of this small village of less than 60 inhabitants. The original Romanesque church design featured a single nave, which ended in a semicircular apse.
The apse is divided externally into five spaces by four columns, with capitals sculpted with plant motifs. The central space features a blind window and sculpted geometric corbels located beneath the cornice. On the south side of the apse there is a window with a stone block bearing the inscription "ERA milésimas DUCENTESIMA LXXVII". The date 1239 is not currently known to have any specific meaning. However, it is thought that it may be the date of consecration. Finally, the side walls of the chancel were pierced to create two chapels in the post-medieval period.
The church has undergone numerous extensions and remodelling, mainly in the 16th and 19th centuries, which have resulted in a notable difference in its appearance from its original state. The most recent works carried out at the site were in 2014.
In addition to the impressive church architecture, the grounds feature well-maintained gardens and a fountain with benches that imitate Romanesque bas-reliefs.
The town of Moñux is near the main centre of Viana del Duero. It houses the Moñux Tower, a 14th-century building of historical significance. The tower played a pivotal role in the 15th-century conflict between Castilians and Aragonese.
The festivities in Viana de Duero are held on 19 June and 24 August, while in the hamlets of La Milana, Moñux and Perdices they are celebrated on 1 and 2 October.
