The Torrejalba hill
The Torrejalba hill, situated at an altitude of 1078 metres above sea level, is located 3 kilometres from Almarail.
In response to the Castilian initiative to repopulate Muslim territory, the Caliphate took steps to reinforce its borders by building fortifications. This watchtower forms part of the defensive fortifications and its purpose was to monitor the routes that were used as a link between the fortresses. The watchtower thus allows for the control of the Duero valley, maintaining visual contact with the Moñux castle, through which it communicates by means of smoke signals or mirrors.
The watchtower is an 11-metre cylinder, divided into storeys within the interior. The walls of the building are approximately one and a half metres thick. The outer face is constructed of medium-sized stones, while the inner face is less ostentatious due to the use of stones of different types. The fortification has no openings other than the gate.
The name Torrejalba translates as "white tower," a reference to the colour of its walls. It is also commonly referred to as Turujalba or Turrujalba by the local population.
Since 2016, the monument has been designated an Asset of Cultural Interest due to its historical and artistic value.
In December 2018, the structure was restored to consolidate it. Following the restoration, a carbon-14 test indicated that the construction date was between 950 and 1032.
