Chapel of the Santos Mártires
One of the architectural gems that the town of Garray is proud to showcase is the chapel of the Santos Mártires.
The temple was constructed in the 13th century at the foot of the hill of La Muela. This example of late Romanesque architecture in Soria was constructed on top of an earlier building that no longer exists. The only remaining element is a baptismal font dating from the 11th century.
Although the chapel was originally dedicated to Saint Michael, it was later decided to dedicate it to some martyrs of the first centuries of Christianity, whose relics were brought here from Rome in the 18th century. The following individuals are considered Saints by the Church: Nereus, Achilleus, Domitilla and Pancratius.
The church comprises a rectangular nave with three apses at the chancel. Of the three, the central apse is particularly large, a rare and curious feature that is found in only a few Spanish Romanesque monuments. This apse is constructed using high-quality ashlar masonry and features long, narrow windows known as “saeteras" (arrow slits) on the exterior. Additionally, the structure features buttresses with columns that are embellished with plant motifs.
The roof is of an age that has resulted in the slate slabs being laid in staggered courses. The chancel and the door also date from this period, while the walls on the north and south sides are somewhat more modern.
