Fuencaliente Lighthouse
watch over the local area, having withstood several volcanic eruptions that have left their mark on the history of the southern region of the island.
The first lighthouse was built in 1892, after a lengthy and costly process. Although the present structure dates back to 1903. Each component, including the volcanic stone used in its construction, was transported by ship from the quarry in Arucas, Gran Canaria. Over time, various geological phenomena have challenged its resistance, facing extreme situations such as the earthquakes prior to the eruption of the San Juan Volcano in 1949. The eruption of the Teneguía Volcano in 1971 caused additional damage to the structure due to seismic movements. In view of the marked deterioration, the decision was taken in 1983 to build a new tower of approximately 24.15 m, alongside the original lighthouse.
In 2006, a complete reconstruction of the old lighthouse was carried out, to house the Island of La Palma Marine Reserve Interpretation Centre, underlining the commitment to preserving and sharing La Palma’s rich maritime and geological history.
