El Tablado

El Tablado is an area in the north of La Palma, in the municipality of Villa de Garafía. The importance of this area lies in its scenic beauty, which is why it is considered a Protected Landscape. An impressive space with houses celebrating traditional palm tree architecture, and its elevated location on a mound formed between the Fagundo and Los Hombres ravines.
From an historical perspective, El Tablado was an economic power in La Palma, thanks to wood and coal production. These materials were extracted from the laurel and pine forests, located in humid and shady areas of the nearest ravines.
The trade of these materials meant a great effort, due to the geography of the island, so the locals and workers were forced to carry the materials down an imposing zig-zagging path to the dock of La Fajana, where the Natural Pools of La Fajana are located today. From there, goods were sent to Santa Cruz on long, narrow, lightweight vessels called fáulas, which were used to transport goods and people between ports.
