Artrutx Ligthouse
Located on Cape Artrutx, on the south-western tip of the island, this lighthouse designed by engineer Emili Pou was inaugurated in 1859, making it one of the oldest on the island.
It initially ran on vegetable oil and later on petrol until it was converted to electric power in 1930. It was finally automated in the late 1980s.
Initially, its tower measured around 17 metres high, but this height was doubled in 1969 to comply with the 1967 Lighting Improvement Plan, thus reaching its current height of 34 metres. During this work, the buttresses that give it its unique appearance were added to reinforce the stability of the tower. Another unique feature of this infrastructure is its distinctive decoration, as the white and blue bands are horizontal, unlike the rest of the lighthouses on the island. Together with Capdepera lighthouse, in the neighbouring island of Mallorca, it marks the ends of the strait between the two islands. In 2005 it was incorporated into Menorca's catalogue of historical heritage.
Although its location, surrounded by a residential area (Cala en Bosc), is not as picturesque as that of other more solitary lighthouses, there is a good tourist offer in the area, as even the old lighthouse keepers' house has been transformed into a hotel.
