Hypogeum of Torre del Ram
Hypogeums (from the Greek hypógaion, underground chamber) are artificial underground galleries or rooms with funerary functions, which in the case of Menorca are located mainly on the west of the island.
The hypogeum of Torre del Ram, located in En Blames Bay to the east of Ciudadela, is a collective tomb dating back to the Bronze Age (1600-1200 BC). It consists of a rectangular chamber measuring around 9 metres long, with a bench running around the perimeter, which can be accessed via a stepped corridor.
This underground construction is accessed through a chimney that leads to a staircase.
Unfortunately, there is not much information about the people who were buried here or the funerary offerings, as this building was emptied and has even been reused as a stable by shepherds. However, schematic engravings were discovered on the interior walls of the hypogeum representing various figures, among which boats have been identified, although these engravings have not been dated with certainty.
It should be noted that this infrastructure is one of the 32 monuments of the Talayotic Menorca candidacy presented to form part of the World Heritage of Humanity.
