Cape Favàritx
S'Albufera des Grau Nature Park is home to one of the oldest geological sites in Menorca, belonging to the Paleozoic Era: Cape Favàritx, an outcrop of black and greyish slate formed by strange, irregularly shaped rocks and sparse vegetation that give this spot a certain supernatural appearance.
This cape is famous for housing one of Menorca's most famous constructions: Favàritx Lighthouse. It was built in 1922 and is the third of the lighthouses that protect sailors on the north coast. Many will recognise it because, along with the landscape, it forms one of the most popular postcards of the island.
One of the most striking elements of this spot is undoubtedly the small lake called Cós des Síndic. It is a raft or temporary Mediterranean pond and is one of the most peculiar in Menorca.
The waters of this peculiar pool come both from the rain and the sea, especially from strong storms, mainly those of Tramontane winds. This area is flooded from autumn to spring and dries out in summer, forming a fine whitish layer of salt. This is why this place is also known as La Salina de Favàritx (Favàritx salt flats).
It has a very important ecological function: it is a resting, feeding and breeding area for different species of birds and is rich in biological diversity. Hydrophilic plant species such as "Althenia orientalis", "Ruppia maritima" and "Lamprothamnium papulosum" can be found here. It is therefore classified by the European Union as a priority conservation habitat, given its geological importance.
You can also top off your trip with a short visit to the nearby beaches: Presili Bay and Tortuga Bay, which are just south of Cape Favàritx.
